The Story of Shitaya Mannencho to be screened at Theatre Cocoon
18 August 2020
Bunkamura Theatre Cocoon have announced the 2012 production will be screened in October.
The 2012 stage production 『下谷万年町物語』 (The Story of Shitaya Mannencho), written by Juro Kara (1981) and directed by the late Yukio Ninagawa is due to be screened at Theatre Cocoon in October 2020.
The play, which stars Tatsuya, Rie Miyazawa and Takahiro Nishijima is about the former Tokyo slum ghetto known as ‘Shitaya Mannencho’. In 1947, when the city was transformed into a metropolis, the Shitaya ward was merged with Asakusa to form the modern Taito ward. The play features a cast of over 100+ actors (many of whom perform as male prostitutes).
The theatre has said, “For Bunkamura Theater Cocoon, it will be a memorable performance to celebrate the reopening of the theatre. A fantastic blockbuster drama set on the stage where the author, Kara Juro spent his childhood. It is a tragic love story, which goes back through time, and shows the robustness of the people who live at the bottom of society. Please look forward to the miracle stage where the nostalgic atmosphere and swirling dynamism of Japan immediately after the defeat swirl the audience into a tremendous dream!!!”
The play will be screened on the 6th October (3.10pm), 9th October (10.20am) and 10th October 7.30pm.
